Cookie Notice
How thetnm.org uses cookies, pixels, and similar technologies, and how you control them. This Notice expands on Section 9 of our Privacy Policy.
What these technologies are
Like most websites, thetnm.org uses cookies and similar technologies, small files and identifiers stored on your device, along with pixels, web beacons, software development kits, and local storage, to operate the site, keep your session secure, remember your preferences, measure engagement, and improve performance. Some are set by TNM (first-party) and some by the service providers that help us run the site.
The categories we use
- Strictly necessary. Authentication, security, fraud prevention, billing, load balancing, and accessibility. These keep the site working and cannot be switched off without breaking core functionality.
- Functional. Remember your preferences, such as your language and your light or dark theme.
- Analytics. Help us understand, in aggregate, which pages are read, how the site performs, and where it can be improved. We use Google Analytics for this, with Google’s advertising features turned on (see Google Analytics and advertising features below), and we keep this data pseudonymized or aggregate wherever we can.
- Advertising and remarketing. We use the Meta Pixel and Google’s advertising features to measure our outreach and to show TNM’s own messages on Facebook, Instagram, and Google to people who have visited this site. That means Meta and Google receive information about the pages you visit here and may connect it with what they already know about your accounts on their platforms. You can turn this off with the Global Privacy Control or the controls listed below.
Video and session activity
Where the site embeds video, we use measurement technology to understand viewing engagement. By using the video features you consent to disclosure of your video-viewing activity to TNM’s service providers for analytics, security, and product-improvement purposes. We and our service providers may also record session activity, pages, clicks, interactions, IP address, device and browser information, for quality assurance, security, fraud prevention, and product improvement. You may withdraw consent by clearing cookies, disabling third-party trackers in your browser, or writing privacy@thetnm.org.
Google Analytics and advertising features
We use Google Analyticsto measure how the site is used, with Google’s Advertising Features turned on, including Google Signals. When you are signed in to a Google account and have Ads Personalization turned on, Google may connect your visit with the information it holds about that account. That gives us aggregate demographics and interests, lets us measure activity across the devices people use, and lets us show TNM’s own ads on Google to people who have visited this site. We see this only in aggregate. We never learn your Google account identity.
You can control or opt out of this at any time:
- Manage Ads Personalization and review what Google holds about you at Google My Ad Center and My Activity.
- Install the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on to stop Google Analytics on every site you visit.
- Decline analytics cookies in your browser, or send the Global Privacy Control signal, which we honor as described below.
How to control cookies
You can manage or delete cookies through your browser settings, and you can set most browsers to warn you before accepting cookies or to refuse them. Disabling certain cookies may affect how the site functions for you. Mobile devices offer similar controls in their settings.
Meta Pixel
We use the Meta Pixel, a small piece of code from Meta, the company behind Facebook and Instagram. When you load a page, it sends Meta the address of that page, your IP address, basic browser and device information, and a cookie identifier (_fbp). Meta uses this to measure how TNM’s ads perform and to let us show TNM’s messages on Facebook and Instagram to people who have visited this site. We receive aggregate reports from Meta, not a list of who visited. Meta’s handling of this data is governed by its own privacy policy.
You can control or opt out of this at any time:
- Review and limit how Meta uses your activity for ads in your Meta ad preferences.
- Block third-party cookies or use tracker blocking in your browser.
- Send the Global Privacy Control. When you do, this site does not load the Meta Pixel at all.
Global Privacy Control and opt-out signals
Where you transmit a recognized opt-out preference signal, including the Global Privacy Control (GPC), we treat that signal as an opt-out of any sale of personal information, any sharing of personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising, and any targeted advertising, for the browser that sends it. We honor the GPC on thetnm.org regardless of whether a particular law requires it. When your browser sends it, the site does not load Google Analytics or the Meta Pixel, so neither Google nor Meta receives anything from your visit. We do not respond to legacy “Do Not Track” browser signals, because there is no industry-standard interpretation of them.
Retention and changes
Cookies and browser identifiers are retained as set in the cookie configuration, generally up to twenty-four (24) months. We may update this Notice from time to time; when we do, we will update the Effective date above.
