Texas Coastal Crude Exports Surpass Imports for the First Time
Oil exports from the Texas coast outpaced imports for the first time in 2018, a milestone the movement pointed to as evidence that an independent Texas could stand on its own energy infrastructure.
Oil exports from the Texas coast have surpassed imports for the first time. Citing Department of Energy figures, the Houston Chronicle reported that in April, exports in the Houston-Galveston port district exceeded imports by 15,000 barrels a day, and that by May the gap had grown to 470,000 barrels a day, driven by infrastructure expansion at Houston, Corpus Christi, and Port Arthur.
A common argument against Texas independence is that the state lacks the infrastructure to make it on its own. On energy, the numbers say otherwise. An independent Texas would not only meet its own energy needs but would be positioned to sell to the union, and to the world, for the foreseeable future.
