Dr. Matt Qvortrup
Political scientist and referendum expert, TNM Advisory Board
The BBC has called Matt Qvortrup "the world's leading expert on referendums." His book I Want to Break Free: A Practical Guide to Making a New Country (Manchester University Press, 2022) sets out how new countries have actually been made, and his latest, Understanding Referendums (Edward Elgar, 2025), compares how referendums work around the world.
An Oxford-trained political scientist, he teaches at the University of Notre Dame Australia in Sydney and is an adjunct professor at LUISS University in Rome, after years as Professor of Political Science at Coventry University. He edited the European Political Science Review from 2016 to 2023 and has advised the United Nations and the UK Foreign Office. He has spoken at TEXITCON and sits on TNM's Advisory Board.
