A Word on the United Kingdom's EU Referendum, From Texas

Although the Texas Nationalist Movement is focused solely on the independence of Texas, we are watching the referendum on United Kingdom membership in the European Union closely. The reason is simple: we are engaged in a political fight much like the one taking place in Britain at this very moment.

Texas and the United Kingdom share a history that reaches back to our years as an independent republic, when Britain recognized our claim to independence. In this referendum we hold a unique vantage point. We can see the future, because if the United Kingdom votes to remain in the European Union, its future is our present.

In 1845, Texas joined the American union on the promise that it would keep sovereignty over its own affairs, that the federal government would be limited in size and scope, and that Washington would speak only to matters common to all the states. It has since become clear that Texans were sold a bill of goods. Today the federal government extracts between 275 and 350 billion dollars a year from Texas taxpayers, of which 110 to 150 billion disappears into the federal system and never returns. The federal debt has passed 19 trillion dollars. Our borders are porous and our immigration system is broken.

We have a constitution and elections, but with Washington's intrusion our officials have been left to little more than to educate, medicate, and incarcerate. It is the illusion of self-government: a governor who can barely govern, a legislature that can barely legislate, and a supreme court that is anything but supreme. The bureaucrats in Brussels look to Washington and envy its power. Texas should add its voice now, while the lesson is still plain to see.
