Texans' Share of Federal Interest Has More Than Doubled Since 2019
Texans' share of the interest Washington pays on the federal debt rose from $30.7 billion in fiscal 2019 to $72.0 billion in fiscal 2024 and $79.2 billion in fiscal 2025. Interest pays for past borrowing. It buys no road or base in Texas.

Method
Federal net interest is the fiscal-year total from the Monthly Treasury Statement, Table 9, published by the U.S. Treasury's Bureau of the Fiscal Service.
Texans' share applies Texas's share of all IRS gross collections across fiscal 2019 to 2024, 8.16 percent, to every year. Holding the share fixed means the line shows the growth of the interest bill itself, not a change in Texas's share of federal taxes.
The fixed share is the conservative choice. Texas's share of IRS collections rose to 9.02 percent in fiscal 2025. Applied to that year's interest, it would put Texans' share at about $87.5 billion.
Interest is part of the federal deficit, not an addition to it. In fiscal 2024 Texans' share of new federal borrowing was about $150 billion, of which about $72 billion was interest and about $78 billion was spending above taxes (Can Texas Make It?, Part III).
